Road Racer
By Olly Fox & Jules Maxwell
Told through the prism of the Irish Road Racing scene between the 1980s and 2000s, Road Racer is about a Road Racing dynasty, set in Country Antrim, Northern Ireland. Road Racer tells the story of a matriarch, a grandmother, who outlives all the men in her life. Uncles and husbands, sons and grandsons.
A grandmother who cherishes the sanctity of God-given life, whilst her boys seem hell-bent on riding to glory on their motorbikes. What price winning when winning means riding so close to death? Road Racer is primal. It will pulse to the thrum of drums, to the beating of hearts, and to the beating of bike steel in the mechanic’s shed. If ever a story needed songs to deliver it, Road Racer is it.
Songs from the Caledonian soul, which propel, unite and ignite. Set against the backdrop of the Troubles, Road Racer examines stark choices. To take the road and march it? To take the road and riot? Or take the road and race? It’s about the god-forsaken buzz of riding a bike at 200mph down a country road, and the god-forsaken task of watching someone you love doing it. It’s about men who play and women who endure.
“For her life, like human life everywhere on the planet, had speeded up, and speeded up until peace was rarely possible. Always there was movement, noise, inevitable and constant distraction [... a madness had seized the earth. The madness of speed. As if to speed things up meant to actually go somewhere. And where, after all, was there to go? The present is all there ever is, no matter how much you lean forward or back.” ― Alice Walker, “Now Is The Time To Open Your Heart”.
How To Buy your Ticket
Each ticket corresponds to the number of seats you need. For example if there are two of you, buy ONE ticket of 'Room For Two People' - this will give you two seats in a cluster socially distant from other seats. 'Room for Three' gives you three seats on one ticket and so on. If there are up to six people in your party, buy any combination of each ticket to add up to the number of seats you need.
Each individual ticket as named gives you:
Room For One = one seat
Room For Two People = two seats
Room For Three People = three seats
Room For Four People = four seats
Social Distance Seating at The Playground Theatre
To comply with Covid-19 Social Distancing guidelines, tickets for this event are only available in seating clusters of seats. Patrons who are coming in a party of up to six people will need to purchase two or more seating clusters appropriate to their needs. Your party may not necessarily be in clusters of seats next to each other, but each cluster is socially distant from other seats.
The venue has a limited number of solo seats and to maintain social distancing within the theatre anyone requiring solo seating when all of these are sold will need to purchase a 'Room For Two' or higher ticket.
Parties or groups larger than six people will be refused admission to comply with the latest Covid-19 Social Distancing Guidelines.
We apologise for any inconvenience this might cause but the venue has to ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons visiting the theatre and the seating restrictions enable us to comply with these requirements and still stage live theatre for you to enjoy.
Latecomers
To ensure the health and safety of all audience members, performers and theatre staff and reduce the risk of Covid-19 cross-contamination we regret that any latecomers will not be permitted into the Theatre.
Covid19
Please ensure you bring and wear a mask in the theatre or purchase one from the box office. Please be advised that if anyone attending shows signs of being unwell or receives a temperature test that indicates they may be affected by Covid19 , the venue reserves the right to refuse admission in the interests of health and safety of all patrons in the theatre.
Temperature checks are being taken at point of entry and you are also required to either provide your contact details for track and trace or scan the QR code linked to the NHS tracking app.
Please note all seating purchases are final and refunds in part or in whole cannot be made if you or a member of your party is unable to attend or is refused entry due to late arrival or as a result of a high temperature check or showing symptoms associated with Covid-19.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
