Southwark Music presents:

PIAZZOLLA

Music by Astor Piazzolla

Tango Extravaganza!
…it takes three to Tango!

  • About
  • ARTISTS
In November 2021 Southwark International Music Festival brought together, united by their love for the music of Astor Piazzolla, three outstanding musicians. Thus began a truly exciting new project. Violinist Alda Dizdari, cellist Idlir Shyti and pianist Jose Zalba-Smith bring their classical and jazz training and fuse it with the Latin American passion to create a unique take on some of the most iconic pieces from the Latin American repertoire. This piano trio offers a unique flavour to the Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla and explores his vast catalogue of tangos in a fresh and genuine way that brings out the passion while exploring his depth of musical language. Their enthusiasm and pathos is infectious, and audiences struggle to keep to their seats.

Alda Dizdari is a power house of passion and intensity. The Albanian born London based concert violinist has been selected as a “One to Watch” musician by the Gramophone magazine, has been featured by the Sunday Times/ Culture Magazine, and appeared live on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 programmes. She has performed as a soloist in the most prestigious venues around the country and abroad, has released four successful CDs for Mellos Records, one DVD live from Canterbury Cathedral performing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto and is the author of “Kiss Me Again, A Memoir of Elgar in Unusual Places”. In 2020 she released it as an Audiobook together with the recording of Elgar Violin Concerto, recorded in Moscow in 2019.
Alda is the founder of Southwark International Music Festival and the not for profit DEA Music Academy.

Since being awarded a ‘Diploma Superior de Concertiste’ degree in 2018, from Ecole Normal de Musique de Paris and a Master degree at the Royal College, Idlir Shyti has been in demand as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader. He has appeared as a soloist with Sudwestdeutsche Kammerorchester, Southbank Sinfonia, Orchestra del Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, Tirana Philharmonic Orchestra, Hounslow Symphony Orchestra, and appeared in festivals such as the Rome Chamber Music Festival, Anghiari Festival, Different Trains Festival, Leamington Festival, Cheltenham Festival, Southwark International Music Festival amongst others.
2022 highlights include the release of his debut solo album for Coviello Classics label and performances at the Music by the Sea Festival in Bamfield BC.

Born in a Cuban musical royalty family, at the heart of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon, Jose Zalba-Smith is a versatile, multi faceted musician with many strings to his bow. He combines an extremely successful career as a Classical and Latin jazz solo flautist, pianist and band leader, often blending styles and taking part in projects that fuse and challenge the borders between genres.
He trained in Cuba at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory and London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is in demand and has traveled Europe as a freelancer with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to mention few. He has released several recordings playing the flute and the piano and performs around the country as an orchestra soloist and leading his Cuban band Tradicional Cubano and Latin jazz band The Mañana Collective.
