Once upon a mattress

Music by Mary Rodgers
Lyrics by Marshall Barer
Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer
House on the Hill Productions is delighted to present Once Upon A Mattress this winter. A modern-day family musical retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Princess and the Pea.

Winnifred, better known as Fred, is not your average princess - she’s loud, independent and knows her own mind. But for her to marry Prince Dauntless, she must prove to his overprotective mother, Queen Aggravain, that she is indeed a true princess in an impossible test. Set against the colourful backdrop of her beloved’s castle and with an upbeat jazzy score, this is the perfect comedy musical to see this holiday season, with the whole family. A fun, action-packed and big-hearted show that simply must not be missed.

Originally seen on Broadway in 1959, Princess Fred was originally played by Carol Burnett in her breakout starring role. Sarah Jessica Parker took up the mantel in the 1995 Broadway revival, while Tracy Ullman starred as Fred in the 2005 ABC television version with Carol Burnett in the role of Queen Aggravain.

Presented by arrangement with R&H Theatricals Europe, with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer

House on the Hill Productions produced the critically acclaimed, sold out, UK Premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s The Frogs, adapted by Nathan Lane and starring Michael Matus and George Rae, and the UK Premiere of William Inge’s Natural Affection starring Lysette Anthony, both at Jermyn Street Theatre.
