Presented by Shakespeare in Italy

Adapted & directed by Bill Alexander

Within Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice lies an inner play about a small network of relationships, one that wrestles with Justice and Mercy, Marriage and Money, Race and Class, one that, in essence, explores the tortured nature of Love.

This new version of the play focuses on six key characters whose entangled loves, desires and fortunes hinge on a better understanding of themselves and their relation to each other in the blackly comic world of a modern-day Venice.

COMPANY

Shakespeare in Italy is delighted that award-winning theatre director Bill Alexander is at the helm for its first full-length production in the UK. Bill began his career at the Bristol Old Vic, directing everything from the classics to innovative drama. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977 and remained there as Resident and then Associate Director until 1992. He was Artistic Director of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre between 1992 and 2001, after which he left to pursue his freelance career. His production of The Snowman is performed in London’s West End every year. Bill and his productions have won numerous awards including Best Director at the Olivier Awards for The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shakespeare in Italy is a charity dedicated to advancing the arts, specifically drama, for the benefit of all. Its aim is to enliven the experience of Shakespeare’s Italian plays with an exciting mix of British realism and Italian intensity to celebrate our similarities and differences, bringing people together in production, community settings and the classroom. We want to find new audiences for his work especially among those for whom English is their second or third language. The charity explores this through performance and workshops in the UK, Italy and beyond. Two former Royal Shakespeare Company actors, Julian Curry and Mary Chater in association with the Italian theatre manager, Sandro Pascucci, founded the charity which is managed by a board of Trustees. Its patrons are Ralph Fiennes, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench.

Shakespeare in Italy's school outreach programme, which will be run alongside its production of A Merchant of Venice, is sponsored by BMH Associates Limited.
